Contemporary Indian Miniature Paintings
In 2021, inspired by a long-term love of Indian Miniatures, Madahar became the apprentice of master miniaturist Ajay Sharma to learn first-hand the craft behind this painting genre. Since 2023 she has been travelling to Jaipur, India, to study with her teacher, developing fundamental skills, e.g. in pigment-making, drawing and painting figures as well as depictions of the natural world. Her practice is substantiated by regular research of historical Indo-Persian Miniature works in international public collections.
Madahar’s series of contemporary Indian Miniature paintings began in 2023. They are made using found images or derived from sources within her own imagination. Recently she has been integrating Western and Indian representational forms to create hybridised paintings. For example, in her Colorado mountainscapes, she uses highly saturated colour photographs from vintage magazines to initiate new works, re-envisioning these majestic Western landscapes in exquisitely rendered miniatures.
