Indian Miniature Painting Transcriptions
In 2021, inspired by a long-term love of Indian Miniatures, Madahar became the apprentice of master miniaturist Ajay Sharma to learn first-hand the craft behind this painting genre. Since 2023 she has been travelling to Jaipur, India to study with her teacher, developing fundamental skills, e.g. in pigment-making, drawing and painting figures as well as depictions of the natural world. Her practice is substantiated by regular research of historical Indo-Persian Miniature works in international public collections.
The transcription paintings inform Madahar’s understanding of the structure of Indian Miniatures, including the stylistic conventions of different painting schools. Creating these works supports the making of original work and vice versa. As British painter John Greenwood writes, “Art of the past must be fermented and feasted upon to bring nourishment to his own.”
