Indian Miniature Paintings
Pursuing a life-long love of Indian Miniatures, in 2021 I began a self-directed apprenticeship with master painter and lineage holder Ajay Sharma, learning first-hand the craft entailed in this painting genre. Each spring I spend several months in Master Sharma’s Jaipur studio developing fundamental skills, such as pigment-making, practising drawing and painting techniques and working with gold. I paint both contemporary works aligned with my interests e.g. Indo-Western landscapes and transcriptions that adapt older Miniature paintings. Making transcriptions is the traditional Indian painting atelier methodology and invaluable to further understanding. My practical work is reinforced by research of historical Indo-Persian Miniature paintings in international collections such as the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
